The Events Industry: Saudi Arabia’s Quiet Economic Powerhouse
Tahaluf CEO Mike Champion explores how Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing events industry is driving investment, international engagement and economic diversification
Inside Saudi

Mike Champion, CEO of Tahaluf
For decades, major exhibitions and conferences have been viewed primarily as platforms for networking and business development. In Saudi Arabia, however, the events industry has evolved into something far more significant. It has become a strategic driver of investment, international engagement and economic diversification—one of the less visible yet increasingly powerful engines behind the Kingdom's Vision 2030 transformation.
This theme took centre stage at the Inside Saudi Club London Summit, where Mike Champion, Chief Executive Officer of Tahaluf, joined Rebecca Hutson, Senior Broadcaster at Inside Saudi, to explore how world-class events are accelerating Saudi Arabia's emergence as one of the world's most dynamic business destinations.
Opening Saudi Arabia to the World
Reflecting on his own experience of working and living in the Kingdom, Champion described the remarkable transformation that has taken place over the past decade.
Before Vision 2030, entering the Saudi market presented considerable barriers for many international businesses. Today, those barriers have been replaced by an environment that actively welcomes international companies, investors and entrepreneurs. For the global events industry, this shift has been particularly significant, creating opportunities that would have been almost unimaginable just a few years ago.
That openness has enabled Saudi Arabia to establish itself as a global destination for large-scale business events, attracting hundreds of thousands of international visitors while strengthening the Kingdom's reputation as a place to invest, innovate and collaborate.
Events as an Economic Catalyst
While Tahaluf employs a relatively modest workforce, its economic contribution extends far beyond the organisation itself.
Champion explained that over the past three years, Tahaluf's portfolio of events has generated an estimated US$17.6 billion in economic impact for Saudi Arabia through business tourism, investment activity, hospitality, transport and wider supply chains. Rather than being isolated occasions, these events create recurring economic activity that supports long-term growth across multiple sectors.
Equally important is the investment ecosystem surrounding these gatherings. Tahaluf's events regularly bring together thousands of investors representing trillions of dollars in assets under management, creating opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs and government entities to connect directly with international capital.
Building Global Brands from Saudi Arabia
Perhaps the most striking illustration of Saudi Arabia's ambition is the speed at which its events have achieved international prominence.
LEAP, launched only a few years ago, has rapidly grown into one of the world's largest technology events by attendance, while Cityscape Global has become the leading real estate exhibition of its kind, generating billions of dollars in transactions and serving as the launch platform for many of the Kingdom's most significant developments.
Champion highlighted how Cityscape has evolved beyond a traditional exhibition. Each edition provides a stage for major project announcements, facilitates significant real estate transactions and creates direct opportunities for investors to engage with developers shaping Saudi Arabia's future urban landscape.
The rapid growth of these platforms demonstrates how Saudi Arabia is not simply hosting international events—it is creating globally recognised brands that are now expanding beyond the Kingdom's borders.
The Power of Public and Private Collaboration
A defining feature of Saudi Arabia's events industry has been the close collaboration between government and the private sector.
Champion explained that Tahaluf's relationship with government institutions has focused less on financial support and more on strategic partnership. This collaboration has enabled the company to navigate complex stakeholder environments, accelerate decision-making and create an ecosystem that encourages private investment while maintaining commercial sustainability.
This model has also supported the growth of entrepreneurship. Through dedicated startup programmes, curated investor meetings and direct engagement with decision-makers, Saudi Arabia's event ecosystem has become an important platform for emerging businesses seeking investment, partnerships and international expansion.
Changing Perceptions Through Experience
Beyond their economic contribution, Champion emphasised another important role played by international events: reshaping global perceptions of Saudi Arabia.
Every conference, exhibition and international gathering introduces thousands of overseas visitors to the Kingdom, allowing them to experience first-hand its business environment, hospitality and pace of transformation. The resulting media coverage and digital engagement extend that impact even further, helping to replace outdated perceptions with a more accurate understanding of a country undergoing rapid economic and social change.
In Champion's view, this growing international exposure represents one of the most valuable long-term outcomes of Saudi Arabia's expanding events sector.
A Platform for Future Growth
As Saudi Arabia prepares to host increasingly ambitious global events across technology, real estate, healthcare, finance and entertainment, the events industry will continue to play a central role in delivering Vision 2030.
Champion argued that the Kingdom's success is driven not only by its landmark projects, but also by the underlying reforms that support long-term growth: simplified regulation, digital transformation, investment protection, an expanding workforce and an increasingly business-friendly environment. Together, these foundations are creating the conditions for sustained economic development and attracting international companies seeking opportunities that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.
A New Global Events Hub
Saudi Arabia's events industry is no longer simply supporting the Kingdom's transformation—it is actively shaping it.
By bringing together investors, policymakers, entrepreneurs and global business leaders, events have become powerful platforms for accelerating investment, driving innovation and strengthening international collaboration. As Vision 2030 continues to unfold, the Kingdom's ability to deliver world-class experiences at remarkable speed is positioning Saudi Arabia not only as a destination for major events, but as one of the world's most influential centres for business, investment and global dialogue.
